What’s Indigo Blue?

Indigo blue is a traditional textile craft whose techniques have been passed down for generations. True Blue pieces begin with pure cotton and natural indigo, using hand-cut templates and a soy-based resist paste to preserve each white pattern before dyeing.

The cloth is dipped repeatedly in the indigo bath to build its rich color. After the resist is removed and the fabric is washed, the pattern appears crisp and bright. The variations left by this handmade process are part of the beauty of every piece.

Natural indigo comes from the indigo plant, historically known in China as Daqing or Banlan. Its enduring color and distinctive character have made indigo cloth useful for garments, bags, table linens, bedding, and household textiles for centuries.

How it is made

The design is cut by hand, resist paste is applied through the template, and the cotton is left to dry. The fabric is then dipped several times for a light blue or many more times for a deep blue. Finally, the paste is scraped away, the cloth is washed, and the finished fabric is sewn into a useful object.
